Patterson writes to Mitchell to present him with information perhaps to be of use in Mitchell's book about the youth of George Washington. Patterson writes concerning a legend and "curious tradition...startling to the servants and apt to be handed down by them for generations" regarding George Washington's supposed birth in a plantation's kitchen building, and briefly mentions the typhoid epidemic at the University of Virginia in 1828.
